A NOTE TO TEACHERS/ADMINISTRATORS/PARENTS

This survey is being conducted as part of my MA requirements in Educational Technology at Cal State Northridge. As a new secondary education teacher I have been quite surprised to find how little is known about engineering as a science, engineering careers, or the rigors of engineering programs by secondary education math and science teachers and administrators.

When people read or hear the news about our need to get more people to pursue science and technology educations they do not understand that a vast majority of the jobs that must be filled are not biologists, chemists, or physicists. The jobs that are having to be filled with people from India, China, and other foreign countries are OVERWHELMINGLY ENGINEERING positions.

This form is an independent survey conducted to help other secondary education science teachers and administrators better understand how programs such as PLTW  can benefit their students and their school and how such courses would fit within their own programs.

I have recently forayed into the secondary education field bringing with me nearly 25 years of experience working as an engineer, engineering manager, and owner of an engineering software and services company I am acutely aware of the need for programs such as this as well as the challenges faced in making these types of programs available to the students who would be most positively impacted by them.

Part of my motivation for entering education is based on my first hand knowledge of the severe shortage of home-grown engineers produced by our education system. My experience has taught me that the best engineers in the world are still products of American public schools and Universities. At the same time many kids today that have all the attributes that give them that same potential never even pursue engineering careers because they are either unaware of, unprepared for, or in some other way prevented from joining the pool of future engineers.

This survey is an initial attempt to determine how and if the PLTW program is an example of a successful approach to address the problems described above.

My hope is that this survey and any future studies that I undertake will help to make PLTW type courses available to all students that wish to take them and that pre-engineering becomes a part of every student's core science education.
