Reading Strategy

Constructing Meaning with LIE

  • Read LITERALLY.

What does the text say? Put it in your own words, paraphrase, or tell someone else the gist of what you've read. If you're asked to explain a passage, begin by giving a brief overview of the main ideas.

  • Read INFERENTIALLY.

What does the text mean? Discuss or analyze what the text says. Make connections with other things you know or have read. Use the data to make predictions or inferences.

  • Read EVALUATIVELY.

What do you think about the text?
What are the implications of the text?
Give your opinion of the literary work. If the chart were extended, what would it show? How does the poem make you feel? What does the passage make you wonder?
